Communication and Collaboration Day 4
September 17, 2013 § Leave a comment
Today you will finish working on your team’s movie trailer and start a new project.
PART ONE: Movie Trailer
By now you should have all your video footage, finish your video and upload.
STEP 1: Write the captions and finalize your movie trailer.
STEP 2: Upload your video to our class YouTube channel. Get a YouTube account info from me. In the movie description, add your names so that I know who created those videos.
Is your team on the fast track and uploaded it already? Read this article on Red & Black about a brain research using movie trailers.
STEP 3: Let’s watch the movie trailers together and vote for the best.
PART TWO: Creating a Commercial
There are many other communication and collaboration tools. One of my favorite places to search for new tools (that are free) is on the Go Web 2.0 site. You might try exploring under the “kids”, “collaboration”, and/or “communication” tabs on this site. It will show you some additional tools you might want to learn more about. Another great place to look is Edutecher. And the Matrix lists some tools as well.
Here’s a table of even more tools that you might find interesting:
FOR YOUR COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION Commercial PROJECT:
You’ve been hired by a tech company to develop an informercial for one of their products. The company thinks that their tool will really benefit communication and collaboration in classrooms – but teachers aren’t really aware of their product. The company needs you to develop a 1-minute infomercial about their product to convince teachers that the tool will benefit students. The purpose of your infomercial is AWARENESS – it is not a training video.
Step One: Select one of the tools listed above (or one that you found on your own) that you would like to explore. You’ll let me know which tool you want to choose by 2:00 pm today. Spend some time exploring the tool and think about how you would explain this tool to someone else.
Step Two: Start thinking about how you will create an informercial about your tool. What are its features? Why would a teacher, parent, administrator, resource teacher, and/or student use it?
Let’s look at some irresistible informercials. You might be able to learn a few tricks to captivate your audience and make them call.
Step Three: You’ll be using Jing to share what you know about your tool so you’ll need to download Jing and watch the tutorial on capturing video. Then watch the tutorial on Screencast.com for uploading your video and getting a link to it for your webpage. (Should you need more help, please feel free to ask me.)
Since you’ll want to record, you’ll need a microphone. If your computer has a webcam, then you have an internal mic to use. If you don’t know if you have a mic – start working on your commercial – Jing should be able to locate your mic – if it doesn’t, then you likely don’t have one. You can check out a microphone for 7 days from OIT in Aderhold. It’s in rm 232 and you just need your student id.
Step Four: Create your commercial. Using Jing, take us on a visual tour of your tool and tell us some of the things you thought about in Step Two of this task. Some students create powerpoint slides to share, others just navigate through the tool as they talk about it. Please don’t conduct a “training session” – we don’t have to know all the ins and out of the tool. We just need to want to use it. It’s an informercial – sell the product!! With Jing you’re limited to 5 minutes – but if you can say it best in 1-2 minutes, it’s completely okay. Remember, the funnier the better!
Here are some student examples from the last semester.
Step Five: Create a new page on your portfolio called, “Communication and Collaboration.”
Add a brief description and a link to your infomercial.
Here is an example of Communication and Collaboration page.
1. Make sure to post your tool choice before 2:00 today. If a tool has already been selected twice, please choose another one.
2. Your Tool Kit is due this Friday.
3. We will take a communication and collaboration quiz this Friday.
4. Your informercial is due Wednesday, September 25 at the beginning of class.
