Creativity Contract – Day One

Did you have a good spring break?


What is creativity? Here’s a book that does a nice job of summing up creativity in children (or in this case, rabbits).

A reminder of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) that address creativity and innovation:

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.


a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.
b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.
d. identify trends and forecast possibilities.


We’re trying something different for the next few days of class. You’ll be using a learning contract to determine what you’ll be working on for the rest of our Creativity Unit. Each class session will begin with a discussion about what everyone is working on, I’ll share a relevant video or anecdote or I might spotlight a new tool. The remainder of each class will be spent working on the projects you selected in your learning contract, conferencing with me about what you are learning, and working with/ sharing ideas with your classmates.  It’s going to be fun.  Plan to bring snacks, headphones to listen to music, etc.  From today through March 29 – we are a Creativity Learning Lab.

The first thing you’ll need to do is think about the relevance of creativity in K-12 classrooms. We’ll watch a short video from Sir Ken Robinson about how schools are killing creativity (you don’t have to agree with him to learn from his TED talk). Then we’ll talk a bit about what learning contracts are and how they might benefit learning (and teaching). And I’ll give you a brief overview of each of the projects.  You can view a contract from last semester here. Please note that several requirements have changed a good bit for this semester but this example will let you see what a finished project might look like.


All of the resources for the next two weeks of class are available on the Creativity and Innovation site. I’ll post updates on our class blog – but the details for each project will reside on the creativity site.

1. Tell me what you are planning to work on by completing this survey before Thursday’s class.
2. Begin working on your Creativity Contract. This is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, April 3.
